keyboard not working

Hi anybody got ideas on this before I take pc apart: turned pc on, setup msg sayning keyboard not detected. I checked that it was plugged in but no light on, turned power off and rebooted but same thing again. If I pull the plug out then put it back in the lights on keyboard come on for a second.

Any clues?

    wrong port(mouse)?, is this a usb keyboard?, maybe the bios has reset and is not set default to support usb as legacy device(ps2) bit more info required i think

    correct port with original keyboard -repeatedly pressing F1 cures the problem until shutdown. Just noticed that this problem occurs with all external devices -graphics pad in mouse port: never been a problem for 5 years 'til now. Other devices, cam, scanners, printer in USB again no problem until today.

    checked -fine. No sign of any physical damage -just taken pc apart -no loose connections -I'm baffled
