Re - Credit Card Protection Plan and Redundancy.

Hi

I'm a long time lurker on the site but a first time poster so if anyone can help with this I'd be really grateful.

Basically, I was made redundant over a year ago now (Jan 2007). At first I was able to meet my repayments on my Capital One Card, after a while as money got tighter - it got more difficult which is when I remembered that I'd taken out payment protection insurance when I first got my card and that it covered redundancy.

Probably the very first thing I should have done was to remember this the moment I got made redundant but to be honest (and looking back) I think that the redundancy came as such a massive shock that for the rest of the year (and probably up to this summer) I was suffering from undiagnosed depression.

Anyway I called up Capital One at the beginning of September 2007 and they told me that the Payment Protection Insurance was covered by Axa and they gave me the number to call - which I did. Only to be told by quite an unhelpful lady at Axa that Payment Protection Insurance was only paid out if you were receiving benefits.

Because my partner was working (on a low wage but working) we weren't claiming benefits. Probably again, we should/could have been but because of my state at the time I wasn't as on the ball as I should have been.

Cut to this week. I've just sorted out a repayment plan with Capital One, it's a long term plan even though the amount owed (in the grand scheme of things) isn't a great deal £600 because we're really on the brink of financial ruin now, my partners not working and although we have enough to pay the bills this month, next month is a worry.

I know I should have done it sooner but had my head in the sand for the past few months - the man on the phone was very helpful and pointed out that I had two things that were still being charged every month (classic case of being terrified to open the statements) one of them being the card payment protection insurance. I told him that I had contacted Axa when I was made redundant and that I was told you could only claim on the insurance if you were in receipt of benefits and he suggested that this wasn't the case and I should contact Axa again.

Now here's the thing I'd like some advice on please. First thing is that I'm terrified of money and dealing with a financial company. I know that sounds very silly but the thought of it is enough to reduce me to tears. (For example I have all my bank statements which list all my bank charges for the past 6 years and it runs into at least 3 thousand pounds, but because I'm with Clydesdale - who tend to fight bank charge reclaims I'm literally paralysed with fear about starting to reclaim them).

So the thought of phoning Axa is paralysing me again (even typing this is starting a panic attack!). Have you any advice as to whether A. I've left this too late to do anything about and B. If not, how should I approach it.

If you can give me any advice at all that would be a huge help.

  • I've been having similar problems. My husband has the same PPI but Capital One keeps giving him the wrong number to get in touch with Axa! In fact it's been such stress for him every tim he goes to try to resolve it, he now can't seem to do much due to his fear to follow through with this. Can you send me the number of AXA that you've been given? It could help me.

Secondly, I know it's hard, but get in touch with CCCS. Just put it in Google. They can really really help you with your dealings with financial companies.

Good Luck...any number for Axa again, would really help.

    Cheers
