At first I thought this email was some sort of spoof/scam/phishing attempt so I forwarded it to spoof@paypal. I was quite surprised to get an email back from them saying it was genuine!
So what the heck is going on? Do I still need to 'upgrade' my account?
This was in relation to an echeque and since then I have sold a number of other items without any problem and received payment thru paypal. Also, checking my 'merchant account' I've already filled out the details to authorise me receiving between £5,000 & £25,000 per month (I wish was near this amount!!!)You received 6.75 GBP from *******@hotmail.co.uk on 3 Nov. 2008. If you do not claim your funds by 3 Dec. 2008, this transaction will be cancelled and the money will be returned to *****@hotmail.co.uk's account.

You are being asked to manually claim this money because:

I had a similar e-mail a while ago, and I don't receive $10,000 a month or anything even close to that. I went to my Paypal account (ignoring the link in the e-mail) and found that the payment to which the e-mail referred was showing as uncleared, not unclaimed, and I couldn't see any option to claim it manually as the e-mail had advised. I decided to wait till the stated expected clearance date to see if would go through OK. In the morning on that date, it was still uncleared. When I checked back in the evening it was showing as cancelled. I contacted the buyer who told me it had shown as unclaimed at his end, and he'd thought I'd changed my mind about selling the item and cancelled the payment. He then initiated another Paypal payment, which again is an e-cheque. I haven't had another e-mail like that so hopefully it'll be processed as normal this time.0

Good advice you 2, but as stated I did contact paypal (in a new browser tab) and they replied that it was an official paypal communication.
Now that's interesting, perhaps I should contact the buyer and explain something 'odd' is happening!Contains_Mild_Peril wrote:I had a similar e-mail a while ago, and I don't receive $10,000 a month or anything even close to that. I got one too
email had all the right info but didn't look professional
It stated info about a real echeque which hasn't cleared yet and has nothing on it for me to claim it.
I don't have a $10,000/month turnover either and I did fill their merchant forms in ages ago.
I forwarded it to spoof@paypal and the message I got back said it wasn't a fishing email but it say that didn't was that it was genuine either.
I was concerned about how someone had got all that info, now I think it's time to contact the buyer and a different bit of Paypal and see if they know what's going on.0

The emails from Paypal about claiming e-cheques are genuine – I've had 4 in the past few days! There's a discussion on it on the powerseller boards and an ebay employee said basically just to ignore them emails and that Paypal are working to fix the problem. If you're in doubt don't click on any links in the email to be on the safe side and report it to paypal.0

wow, paypal sounds like its getting worse- I have had issues with paypal, not about e-cheques or payments pending or anything like that, but I cancelled an account I had listed on paypal as I no longer use it. I cancelled it about a year ago.
So now, daily I am getting emails from paypal asking me to cancel the account as its not able to be used ????
I called up paypal, they said to send it to the spoof@paypal address, I did, got thanked by paypal. But continued to be sent the emails.
I cannot think it would be phishing, no one else would email me to tell me to cancel an account I had removed a year ago, be via paypal in the address and also have zero links.
I think paypal are getting worse! charging more and doing less. Too many automated services and not enough customer care. Makes me worry! Thats my money they're messing with!0

I have had the same email too.
Contacted paypal and was told is genuine email...?
Luckily they told me to do nothing and my echeque would clear (and it did)
Must be a glitch or something.
Time they aorted it out though, if so many of us are having the same problem!!0
