No signal from tv after lDIY loft insulation installation

Hubby has been topping the loft with insulation. I told him to lift the cables and put the insulation underneath. Wish he did not, not the tv is not working and it says no signal. Please can somebody advise us what to do before we call the tv engineer? Should not really have let him lose on the loft, this is going to be quite expensive this little mishap, any suggestions, anybody!! If he goes up there gain, he says there are so many cables, which ones should he look for? Thanks

I would have left the cables alone. Oh well!

You need to look for the brown or black round cable. Probably coming from the wall above where your TV is and heading towards where your aerial is.

The flat (probably grey) cables are 240v mains. Don't interfere with them. They will be strung around your loft to all the light fittings etc below.

Is your aerial in the loft or on the roof?

You've probably pulled the cable off the aerial or out of the socket in your wall behind the TV - take that socket off first to see if the wire is still connected.

You may also have a junction in the loft, in which case you've probably pulled one of the plugs out.

Do you have any other TVs in the house plugged into your roof aerial?

My TV aerial is on the loft and I have a link so that when video is played downstairs & sky I can watch it my room. Sky is working. downstairs. Yes, I do have other TV.'s plugged in the main aerial and they do not work Hubby will go and have a look tomorrow. He has done enough mishap for the day and he is banned from going up there. Thanks

I mean my TV aerial is on the roof not the loft.

You probably have an aerial distribution box up there and they have probably just come out of that. If he goes to inside where the aerial is outside then the box will probably be there on the wall or on the rafters.

Then again if you have Sky then they maybe different cables and they won't be connected to the aerial I wouldn't have thought
  • Withabix's advice is spot on. Just for reassurance it matters not whether the cables are over or under insulation. It does not affect your TV. It only matters if you've pulled a connection. Co-axial cables (usually brown from aerial) and Sky (usually black) may well have joins in them with push together connectors (bodgers might have just taped wires together). These connectors, and the ones in the back of a TV are very easy to pull apart so this is the likely problem

Thanks, I know, it is not the insulation, he must have pulled the cables out when trying to put insulation underneath. He is going up there tomorrow. Not easy for him being OPA. The TV aerial is brown, and he should look for that, what does he need to do if he has pulled it out to rectify the problem? Thanks
