Iceberg and curly leaf I shred. Round I eat leaf by leaf.
I don't keep HM salads for more than 24hrs cos they do go limp very quickly after dressing. lolLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
i cut it [any lettuce] and wash it in the salad spinner. then keep it in the spinner for a couple of days with the lid on in the fridge.
then i always have ready washed salad in the fridge, and it's my choice of leaves, and none of the nasty bitter red ones, not the curly stuff that tries to choke me!
i only dress it when it's on my plate, or it does go yucky0 -
I keep iceberg in the fridge for weeks at a time as I am a little naughty and forget it is there sometimes.
I always use a plastic knife to cut a head of lettuce as it stops it going brown on the edges.
I have no idea but it seems to work.

I seem to remember a tip about tearing the lettuce leaves off is better than cutting with a knife..........to prevent the edges going brown.;)10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. This is exactly what I do. I have no idea why cutting with a plastic knife works but it does.0 -

Yep, lettuce was invented by the devil. Can only eat it covered in mayonnaise and crispy bacon between two slices of buttered bread!0

Wash all the leafs and seal in a bag (like a freezer bag) I fold the top and use a peg, store at the bottom of the fridge and they'll keep for days. Even bought salad bags keep for days after opening (carefully) if you do this. (Occassionally the big bags are reduced, and offer better value).
Never dress salad leafs before you serve as the dressing 'cooks' the leafs, which is why they go limp.
How about making other salads that keep longer - try cous-cous with lots of spring onion, peppers, olives and mint (feta cheese added to this is delicious).
Or red and green cabbage, shredded, add grated carrot and grated celeriac - add a dressing, either a vinegarette, or if you prefer a mixture of mayo, yoghurt lemon juice and mustard. This keeps nicely for a few days in a sealed container, and a dollup in a turkey sandwich works well too!0 -

Yes I saw this on a t.v. cooking programme, that it is better to tear lettuce leaves rather than use a knife.I have a plastic lettuce gadget that I bought from Bettaware and it's great, it keeps iceberg for ages it has a spike in the middle that you impale the lettuce on.It is shaped like a large round globe. I also slice chunks of lettuce of with a plastic knife as it stops it from going brown and slimy.
A lettuce in one of these globes lasts about a fortnight.0
