Security Compromised - Card Frozen

More card fraud and it couldn't have happened at a worse time.

This morning I placed an order for a Dell laptop computer and used my HSBC credit card to pay online. All appeared to go smoothly. Then I get a phone call from HSBC to advise me that they have been informed by the police that my card details have been fraudulently 'compromised'. It's absolutely nothing to do with the Dell order, just unfortunate timing, but it has meant that my Dell order payment has not been authorised.

So now I'm having to play telephone ping-pong between HSBC and Dell to get the payment re-presented (Dell say it could take them 24 hours) whilst HSBC keeps a watch on my card account ready to stop any fraudulent transactions. Once the Dell payment has gone through, HSBC will then cancel the card and I'll have to wait about a week for a new one.

Leaving aside the sheer inconvenience of all this, what really makes me angry is that nobody will tell me how or where my card security has been compromised.

For what it's worth, the police may not have told HSBC in case it prejudices their investigation - they have to be so careful not to get evidence thrown out in court.

It does sound like a hassle, but to be honest - I'd personally be very glad that they found out and pro-actively called you, and they do also seem to be giving good service in letting the Dell transaction through; I can't help but think that the likes of MBNA would have just cancelled the card immediately.

So nothing to offer but sympathy - but any alternative course of action would probably involve you in *much* more hassle, if that's any help.

Thanks for the sympathy drew which I do appreciate. And I do understand that the police are probably in a position whereby they cannot legally share information at this time.

I should add that this is not the first time that I have been an innocent victim of card fraud, despite all of my security measures, and I'm sure I am one of many to have experienced this.

From what I have read, the banks are suppressing data about the volume of card fraud now that the police have washed their hands of it. This does not inspire confidence in the banking system.

Having recently bought a laptop via Dell, the credit card delay is the least of your worries... it took weeks for Dell to deliver the laptop, they changed the delivery date three times!
