Incapacity Benefit & Carers Allowance?

I'm hoping for some advice.

I'm currently claiming incapacity benefit which I do need as I can't work through chronic pain and very unstable sugar levels - amongst other things. Basically, I've got 22 different illnesses and have to do everything slowly and carefully - even though I've always worked (up until a year ago) I've lost every job due to my health problems. Working at home would be the only thing I could do (something I could do in my own time around my health problems) but there's nothing available. I'm not shirking, so please don't think I am :)

My Mum has recently become very incapacitated herself - she's 73 and can barely walk because her hip has pretty much collapsed - she's been on the hip replacement waiting list since June.

As I do all I can to help her out - ie I take her to Tesco's once a week and the post office etc - I'm going there myself anyway and it helps her because she wouldn't be able to do it herself. I also help her with things like washing up or pegging out her washing. I also go to her hospital/dr appointments with her. Even though it tires me out and means extra painkillers, she's my mum and I want to help her as much as I can.

As we're on a tight budget - DH was made redundant 2 weeks ago and despite his best efforts he hasn't found another job yet - petrol money is scarce. He hasn't claimed Jobseekers Allowance yet because he's never had a problem seeking employment. If it wasn't for the car, he wouldn't be able to get to interviews, I wouldn't get to medical appointments (nor would mum) etc.

As mum needs a carer, and we need the petrol money so I can take her to appointments, shopping etc, we thought it might be a good idea to find out about carer's allowance.

My question is would getting carer's allowance affect my incapacity benefit?

You cannot get CA and IB paid in full at the same time. You can claim CA, but it won't be paid whilst you have an IB claim. If your IB claim ends, then CA can be paid, if you continue to meet the conditions.
  • Thank you Stazi, it was worth asking :)
