I've suffered from depression for about 7 years now. I've been in and out of hospital due to overdoses. And i don't feel my illness is getting any better, if anything, it's getting worse.
I was wondering, if i claimed for DLA, would it be possiible for my Joint Tenant (also a very good friend) to have the money to care for me?
I need care mainly during the night, as i've found myself becoming more insane at that time!
I don't think i'd be able to cope with a stranger in the house caring for me, if anything, it'd make me EVEN worse.
Thank you for your help.
If you received DLA the money would go to you, your friend may be able to claim Carers Allowance if receive medium/high rate care DLA. Details for Carers Allowance can be found at the following link :

Hi
I was just wondering what the outcome was of the original poster?
I have had single sided deafness and very dibilitating vertigo due to menieres disease for 10 years and have been in and out of work and homeless at times.
I have always been told it is not a 'disability' etc but now i'm wondering if theres a chance i could be entitled to something.0 -
Here is a thread from someone fully deaf in one ear and partially deaf in another who did not get DLA and who failed the appeal.

Here are some other threads discussing the issue - seems to be hard to qualify for DLA for partial or moderate deafness.

Not quite sure how you find yourself becoming more insane during the night - depressed people tend not to remember that much detail!
As you are on JSA, any income you receive from DLA may result in a reduction to JSA. May be worth checking before struggling with the DLA forms (they are long and detailed).

My mum has been deaf in one ear since she was a child. She is now 76 years old. She has other health problems, including some balance problems at times due to her ear and arthritis of the spine. She has applied for Attendance Allowance (DLA is for people under pension age; AA is for older people). A welfare rights advisor came out to help her. However, she didn't get it because she copes with her disability and has done for many years. She doesn't have the level of care needs required to get the benefit and from the sounds of it, neither did the OP. I wonder if he was successful?0

that sucks.
I know someone who is type 1 diabetic and they get DLA and careres allowance etc. Yet they do not need any special requirements - thier illnesses is managed and they have a far better quality of life than me. I have had to leave my waiting on job becuase I cannot hear what people say and i cannot tell where noise is coming from.
feelin like there is no hope0 -

Are you with them 24/7? Are you a doctor? I'm not sure what's worse - your comment or a "friend's" comment of "there's no way you'll get mid rate care - I'm much more disabled than you".

Actually they are a close relative who I looked after for almost a year whilst thier parents weren't around. I have seen the condition at it's worst, but have also seen how well managed it is.
It's fortunate for some people they have a treatable and manageable condition. Unfortunately my condition is not and I am at the mercy of it.
I relaise that with thingslike this it can seem like people are trying to say 'my life is worse than yours' etc. If you had menieres disease then you would know just how much positive mental attitude you need to get up in the morning!
I have always tried to cope and manage with this illness, at times I have been homeless, and the system never seems to work for me, and works very well for others becuase they have well known diseases that fit nicely into a box.
I'm not trying to claim anyone is better or worse off. I'm just saying that in this case, and no doubt many othrs, the system has failed.
But I knocked down and I get up again.
Are you a doctor?
No, but I am training to become an occupational therapist to help people like me, especially where the system has failed them. This gives me a huge understanding of other peoples problems, somethng you dont seem to have.

Not sure what your post means.

Don't be sorry. I';m glad you have aired your concerns. I hope you can see now that this is not just a simple situation, but rather a complex one. I think everyone has a right to a certain quality of life. But the system in this country creates inequalities becuase of burocracy (sp) and an inefficient methods of quantifying, analysing and evaluating situations.
I was under the impression that DLA was for those people who would benefit from extra money becuase thier illness affected thier quality of life.
When you have an illness that affects your quality of life it is sometimes nice to find information and help in forums such as this. I wonder if your input has been helpful?0
