The software you install is complete personal preference, but, in my opinion, the following are the best options:
1. All the drivers for your system
2. Microsoft Anti-Spyware
3. Avast Anti-Virus
4. A firewall software (ie. Zone alarm)
5. An office package (ie. Open Office if you're not going to spend on Microsoft Office)
6. A CD/DVD burning software (ie. CDBurnerXP)
7. Any instant messaging tools (the most lastest versions)
8. Any audio applications (ie. Winamp)
9. Any video and audio codecs (ie. Ace Mega Codec Pack)
10. Any browsers (ie. my favourite: FireFox)
11. Do a complete windows update
At this point, I would recommend create some kind of image. Now, I know the most popular imaging tool that anyone thinks of is Norton Ghost, however, there are alternatives, and free ones too! For example, have a look at DrvImagerXP (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/DrvImagerXP.shtml) and you'll see what I mean. Anytime you screw up your machine, just reformat, and install the image, and u're back at this point again.
That's where I'd head with all new reinstalls. My reasons for choosing the above software over other's is two fold:
1. Mostly freeware
2. Lightweight (doesn't add unnecessary processes, and keeps the computer running optimally... one of the main reasons why everyone's computer blogs down so much)
Anyhow, good luck!0 -
thanks soulistic
quick question should i install mentioned software and then create drive image........or should i create drive image now?0 -
You're very welcome!
I would recommend installing your software before creating a drive image... it's far more convinient later on when you do have to do a restore since all the applications will be installed.0 -
For additional security, to help stop browser hijacks, spyware etc., also read this little article. Very helpful. Written by a Microsoft MVP security expert.....

Lots of free programs there in addition to what's already been (very wisely) recommended by Soulistic.
Stay safe!0
