hi 8 mm tapes without camcorder

i have some hi8 mm tapes which i had off an old canon camcorder which broke, i have tried to play them on 2 different camcorders which support hi8 and neither will play them i want them transfered onto dvd i have heard you can buy a larger empty cassette tape (like a video cassette) which you can put in the hi8 tapes does anyone have any idea what these are called and if they will work?

are you sure they support hi 8 and not just regular 8mm? if you havent made a mistake there then i guess there maybe something wrong with either the tape or the camcorders.
what about the settings on the camcorders? i've never owned a hi 8 camcorder but could there be a setting that switches between hi 8 and 8mm?0 -
