HOw do I view an image file on a hidden partition

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, which has an 'as built' image of my 'c' drive on a hidden partition. As I have modified the contents of the laptop significantly since new I would like to replace the 'as built' image with a more up to date image.

Is this possible?

I do not know how to even view the hidden partition. If I can view this partition, can I format it, install Ghost software and then create my own image file.

Any advice would be apreciated

thanks, Jghal

  • I don't think you would be able to modify it easily. You could probably delete it though!!

AFAIK, you can burn the image to CD once... which I suggest you do!

Then, to update windows, you can slipstream in the service packs and/or hotfixes etc into the disk by copying the disk back to the hard drive.

We have a dell desktop, and the recovery disks contain the image of windows (its not a partition). With Dell disk images its not as simple as just slipstreaming the disk in the normal way - you have to make some minor tweaks and adjustments, but I found the info on the web of how to do this.
  • I did this one time, but, I used Linux to help me. I'm not sure how comfortable you are with Linux, but, if you are, then, I would recommend something like Knoppix to view the hidden partition, and then copy the new ghost image directly.

One thing to bear in mind is that Dell puts in some short cut keys when your computer loads up to start the recovery process from your hidden partition. In the event you replace this image, the short cut keys will stop working properly, and you might end up with a bigger problem than you started.

So, as said by newfoundglory, just burn an image to CD. This way, you're safe on both sides.

    Thanks chaps

I can see the advantages in burning the existing image file to cd/dvd and have now decided that I am keen to do this, even as a first step.

Any advice on how I should go about this as I cannot see the hidden partition in windows explorer, my computer or in Nero's explorer window etc.

    Thanks again

Explorer, Folder Options, View, check Show hidden files and folders.
