Bennetts bike insurance

My brother recently insured his bike for a year with Bennetts bike insurance. The year came to an end and he let his insurance lapse as he no longer wanted to insure it.

But Bennetts automatically renewed his insurance and took £130 off his debit card without his approval to do so.

Is this allowed. He only found out about it a month or so later when he rang up Bennetts to reinsure his bike and they told him he was already insured and they had taken his money.

  • Hi there

Either the policy or the renewal notice will tell you that Bennetts are going to automatically debit the policy unless yor brother asks them not to. The reason is so that you are never left uninsured - you wouldn't believe the number of "I didn't receive my renewal notice and it's all your fault" letters insurers used to get!!

If your brother has had the vehicle declared SORN with DVLA, he may be able to get his money back. Otherwise, I am afraid he will have to either keep the policy or ask them to cancel mid-term.

. The reason is so that you are never left uninsured -.

Not many on here would be gullible enough to accept that!

The consequence may be you are never left uninsured.

But that is not the reason why Bennets do it.

They aren't so philanthropic. More like they hope inertia will set in as they now make you opt out of renewing with them, rather than the more traditional way of doing business where customers used to choose to renew by opting in!
