care home - council contribution

Hi all
Once again many thanks for your input/advice.
Just heard that FIL's own doctor has asked for a consultant's report before assessment plan is made. No idea how long this will take.
FIL law was hospitalised 2 years ago following an illness. He was discharged to his flat without a care package despite us asking for help for him. After 1 night at home he found he couldn't cope with getting dressed or washed. Fortunately we were able to persuade social services that he needed care twice a day. FIL was quite happy with this and looked forward to his council carers coming in.
We also experienced the 'rip off' private carer scenario! He was paying well over the odds for a separate cleaner who thought she could fleece him by offering to administer 'care' such as bathing his feet and supplying him with her left overs as meals. We had a hell of a job to wean FIL off this as he thought she was really nice!!
Anyway it was just 3 months ago he had a fall whilst getting out of bed to get to the toilet. Had to get an ambulance who had to hoist him and get him to hospital. He's been having a bit of a rough time of it since then and he still is very frail and needs help to get to the toilet and cleaning afterwards. He has become confused and has some hallucinations. he has lost a lot of mobility and can only get around with a frame and the help of a nurse. All this plus he is partially sighted too.
Still, at 91 he still tries to remain cheerful and enjoys the company of his young nurses!!
We will await the decisions of the powers that be as to his future care.0 -
Don't be pushed around by Social Services - my Grandfather fell, broke his hip, developed dementia systems, hallucinations, paranoia and was virtually immobile. Social services wanted to send him home with a care package.
The hospitals physios did an accompanied home visit to see what needed to be adjusted and virtually had to carry him round the house and they cut the visit short.
Needless to say Social Services had to accept the doctors reports even though they weren't happy.
But also make sure you do your research on the internet - Social Services will never volunteer information about what can be claimed - only respond to what you ask.
If your FIL is ex miltary the British Legion maybe able to assist too.0 -
cheers fredsnail
Very much take your points.
FIL has access to British Legion assistance. His current flat was a BL property until they were taken over by housing21.0 -
Not sure which part of the country you are in but would highly recommend the care given by Royal Star and Garter for ex servicemen. they have a new home in Solihull with care nursing care and dementia care if required and one in Richmond,Surrey for care/nursing care which is moving near to Hampton Court in a few years . Criteria is that you must have been in HM services at some time in your life and this includes WW2 service.
There is also a Naval home for the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust at Chatham [FONT="]

Many occupations have their own care homes as well so its worth doing a search.
Have just re-read your message and have seen the bit about living in Devon so these are probably a bit far away0
