  • if you're encoding passwords.. look into hashes (e.g md5) and salting.. you don't necessarily encrypt things and decrypt them.. but encrypt them, then match against a stored encrypted value

Its not a password its just a string which I have stored in an array.

I have to do it manually for the CW so I am taking the string and adding 5 to each ascii character. Then I am imploding the array in order to send the string to the server but it dosnt seem to read the encrypted version!?

    Thanks for the advice

Sorry but you're gonna have to work this one out for yourself. If I told you how to do it then what would you have learned? Not a whole lot. University coursework is more about your journey to the solution than the solution itself. In the real world quite often the solution doesn't exist which is why you're doing it. Courseworks like this are teaching you to think.

The only advice I can give is that PHP is Server side scripting only so it'll not help you with the client side scripting. You'll have to find some other tool to do that.

I am puzzled that you don't approach your Tutor, he should point you to the part of your previous coursework that is meant to have covered this area and/or give you hints to get you going again in the right direction. Or what are course tutors for?

Ive been to see him and he has helped abit but he cant do the coursework for me. I needed help this evening when my tutor wasnt here so that's all ive done is ask for abit of help and that's all I get back is abit of a lecture on how I should approach this. I have worked my socks off and im getting no where and whilst doing this other coursework that I can do is suffering. I wish id never asked for help as now i just feel even more useless than before

so have you set up a hash, or a key on the server side. How does the server know the public key?

The irony is, if this student hadn't mentioned they were stuck on coursework, and just had a problem with a system, they would have got more help.

At least he is looking into getting advice, and is honest too. Don't be so hard on him - pointers in the right direction wouldn't hurt.

If I could help I would, but PHP isn't my speciality. There are plenty of sites on the web with tutorials, Google for PHP and Guide. Also O'Reilly print some good books, so check your library.

    Good luck kle87.

Ok, so if you've done 90% of it then you can be more specific as to what you've done so far and highlight exactly where you're having problems. It should be fairly straight forward as it'll be a simple bit of string manipulation on client side and server side.

If you want to post a snip of the code you have for your client side work and then for your server side work I'll be able to point you in the right direction. Use the [code][\code] tags for your code snips.

In relation to my earlier 'lecture', as you so kindly referred to it, having spent time helping out on techie type forums you would not believe the number of people you get just posting up their coursework without even attempting to do it themselves. This is not well recieved. In general, if you can show evidence that you've at least had a stab at it yourself and then ask specific sensible questions then you'll attract more help from folk like me.

I do agree with you there isofa. I tried to explain myself a little in my last post there that I've seen many many people just posting up their coursework without attempting it themselves, especially on the Sun Java forums.

I've had these courseworks myself and it is very daunting when deadlines are looming and you're stuck. There, that's me lightenned up now and ready to help. :D
