Virgin or Sky

We are moving soon and Ive got to decide what TV/Internet.phone provider to go with

Sky:
8mb Broadband with 40 gb usage (through phone line
Sky TV, all 6 sections plus sky sports package
Evening and weeekend calls
Can get a sky plus box for £30
= £45 per month plus BT line rental, so £56, plus other calls

Virgin:
10 mb broadband, not through phone, unlimited use
XL virgin TV and sky sports
Evening and weekend calls and line rental included, no other line rental
= £67 per month plus other calls
(Have a voucher for £30 off my first bill)

The thing is though is Sky broadband rubbish?
If I leave and go to virgin I have only had my BT line for 6 months, is it 12 month contract that I'll have to finish paying anyway?
Im with virgin at the mo, only for 6 months so will I have to finish paying this for 12 months?

What do you think?

  • I think you'll find your Virgin contract is for 12 months so it probably works out cheaper to shift over your subscription (and then possibly review the situation once your 12 months is up).

Work out what contract commitments you have (with BT and Virgin) and add that to the cost for a year (i.e. add any BT commited costs to the Virgin package and any Virgin commited costs to the Sky package). that way you can see the true cost to you which should help in making a decision.

In terms of the services, I have Virgin and used to have Sky. Virgin plusses are the music and tv on demand services (that come free with the XL package), Setanta (again with XL) and the Virgin channels (although these are pretty pants). On the downside, they don't have the Sky channels which can be frustrating. I think Sky does an on demand service now though too so the services are probably much of a muchness.

I have no complaints with Virgin's broadband but haven't tried Sky's. Sky's is more likley to be limited by the phone line though so 8mb is probably not what you'll get. If you're a heavy user the 40gb limit could be a problem too.

I've been on Sky Broadband for over a year now and have no complaints. I've got the most basic one they offer (2mb I think) & it always seem pretty fast to me, but I don't do much downloading just surfing!

Virgin & Sky have ended their fued & Virign are getting Sky's basic channels (Sky 1, Sky 2, Sky 3, Sky Sports News etc) back as of 13th November.
  • Right, I went with Virgin in the end!

I said that sky had offered a skyplus box for £30 and could they do that with V+? She asked her manager and Ive gto one for free!! result!!

With BT, if we have to finishing paying off the contract then its 6 months line rental so not too bad plus I was worried the Sky internet wouldnt be so good as its through the phone line and Ive no idea how close to the exchange the new flat is.
