AA automatic renewal of my car insurance

Hi everyone,

I need some help with my car insurance. I have had AA car insurance last year and it ran out on 29th Oct 2008 and they have renewed it automatically.

I have searched other providers and they are provideing me car insurance for £351.80 and AA has renewed my contract for £525.

is there any way that I can cancel the policy as its been over 12 months. and I haven't renew it, its been renewed automatically.

Your help is much appreciated.

If you dont notify them that you dont wish to renew before its due then they will auto-renew and any cancellation after that will be dealt with under the cancellation terms.

It tells you what you needed to do in the renewal letter.

Write to them cancelling the policy - enclose your insurance certificate.

Send it recorded delivery. Though don't expect a full refund without a fight, as they will deduct cancellation fees from any refund, and will charge for the cover provided.
  • Thanks dunstonh,

I haven't received any renewal letter, all I got is new renewed policy documents. it has completely gone out of my sight about insurance renewal otherwise I'd have searched confused.com for better quote. I have just got the documents through and found out about automatic renewal.

    What shall I do...?

You could still cancel it however I would be very surprised if you'd get the full amount
    - with my policy if i cancel after one day i will only get 75% back (if paid in full) and will be charged £45 for admin (£19 if within the initial 14Days of renewal)
    - ...each month thereafter it goes down by about 15%

If they imply similar to the above I don't think it would be worth your while cancelling and going to another company as its likely to cost you a similar amount in the long run
    - you could of course threaten to leave unless they could lower the premium (maybe £50 off as good will) otherwise you will go to the most competitive insurer

I would be more inclined to do the latter but if they don't budge I would just put it down to being too unorganised (apologies if sounding patronising - not intended) and make sure to do your renewal properly next year

I had this a few months ago with prudential.

I had already taken out another poilcy having never had auto-renewal before.

I called prudential and after a brief (30s) call with a first line jobsworth was put through to someone else (cancellations) who were
    - extremely polite
    - immediately offered to cancel the policy to renewal date
    - then asked about feedback that might help improve CS

overall was very impressed, and sure enough they kept to their word.

Still don't like the idea, but I guess it's a trend -- just caught me out first time. They really should offer to send sms/email reminders.

I guess telling you on the letter under the "what to do next" section isnt enough ;)

I'm suprised people are apparently not receiving renewal letters. Are you not interested to know whether your renewal quote might be acceptable? It's not as if the OP actually forgot when it was due for renewal.

I received mine from Prudential (home insurance) like I always have (I tend to change home insurance provider every year).
