It is my understanding that anyone using a wheelchair and carer/companion, dose not need to invest in a £18 railcard, is this common knowledge I wonder?.

Hi,
From what I can see, it cannot completely render the disabled railcard obsolete as it only permits cheaper travel on the more expensive 'Anytime' tickets, whereas the Disabled Railcard gives discount (also to an accompanying carer) on the cheaper 'Off Peak' and in some cases very cheap Advance tickets.
I suppose it what best suits each person whether to get a Disabled railcard or rely on the non railcard discounts. I know my mum has saved loads with her disabled railcard using both off peak (formerly Saver Tickets) and Advance fares off the web.

You may well be correct, however if only one person gains from this, it has been of use. Incidently I've just renewed my wife's dis.railcard but prior to that, spent ages trying to find an alternative to the 0845 number as via talktalk, I don't pay for regional numbers so reluctantly had to pay for the call.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Try www.saynoto0870.com, it has lots of national numbers including disabled persons railcard, which is 0191 218 8103. I am the same as you, get free national/local geographic numbers, and this site is so well used, and recommended here on MSE.
My husband is disabled, but without a wheelchair, I asked Nationalexpresseastcoast how to deal with buying tickets on line using his disabled railcard, as he and myself as carer can get cheap tickets. They were really helpful and we saved about a third on already heavily discounted seats.0 -
