Hi there,
Does anyone know if you can transfer from a Sky Plus box directly to an external hard drive?

Yes, we did it last week when we had problems with the recordings jumping and needed to do a reset.
My husband did it and I believe he took out the hard drive and used the casing from our external hard drive and then somehow copied the stored info onto his laptop. He was then able to put all the info back on once he had reset the sky box.
Took a couple of hours though.
I think he found out how to do it via Google0 -
I suspect if you used something like Norton Ghost you could do it, but a Google on the specifics of a Sky+ box is probably worthwhile, if its possible you can guarantee someone somewhere will have documented the procedure and put it on a website somewhere. My Excel Mortgage Calculator Spreadsheet: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=11571730

as said above, copy+ can be used to take the data off and put back onto a new drive, but you have to remove the drive and plug it into your PC as a slave last time I looked at it. You cannot 'do' anything with the data as its encrypted and can only be played back by a Sky box. If you want to extract recorded movies/programmes to keep, best you can do is play them out at night using the Sky+ 'copy' function and using a DVD recorder or something to record the playback. I just got an Emprex ME1 multimedia external hard drive enclosure for this purpose. you put a hard drive in it and it can record incoming video onto its hard drive. You can then plug it in to a PC via USB cable and take off the MPG video files.0
