where's the cheapest coffee and sandwich near your train station?

Hi, I've been wondering about this for quite some time and thought this would be an ideal question to tap into moneysavers local knowledge.
I end up on the train due to my job quite a lot and invariably change trains in places I don't know very well. Recently in peterborough I had half an hour to wait between trains and decided to try and find a cheaper coffee and snack than the station vendors which tend to be quite expensive. In the end I found a very tasty bakery in the shopping mall 5 minutes walk from the station. It also tasted even better knowing that my pasty was a fraction of the price I would have paid on the station.
As its good to stretch your legs and save money when on long journeys I was wondering whether anyone could recommend where to go for the best snacks near their local/regular train stations? For me I can recommend Rays bakery across London Road from Manchester Piccadilly station, tasty and cheaper than those in the station.

Reading. Picnic cafe in Butter Market 2 minutes from the station. Excellent coffee and food from a friendly independent cafe (disregard Starbucks, Costa, etc which are alongside).0

I agree you can usually find better value / better food outside the station.
But if you are short on time or nothing nearby it is useful to have a Bite discount card (free on www.bite.co.uk ) that gives you 20% off Burger King, Upper Crust, Cafe Ritazza, Pumpkin and the Pasty Shop found on stations.0 -
What a good idea! I fear no-one would want to visit my local station but my nearest mainline one is Leeds. After leaving the station turn left and follow the mass of people across the main road. You will see a BHS on your right, with a nice take-away in the foyer. Just past that is a Greggs and just past that a Cornish Pasty shop. All just a few minutes walk from the station."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

Incidentally (if you are organised enough!!) retail eyes- the mystery shoping company often has contracts for the "bitecard" outlets as listed above.
Generally this seems to be means a fiver to spend on sandwich & hot drink and a fiver for your trouble of writing the review  they also cover the burger king network as well ( not sure if these are in stations though)

Id love to give you some further details but london stations tend to be filled with all the usual suspects. Kings cross has 2 Mcdonalds opposite the station. Theres Mcds in Liverpool st station - and of course you can still collect your tokens off each hot drink and once you have 6 stickers your next one is free. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
There is a Tesco 3 minutes walk from Kings Cross-come out of the station on the left hand side, turn immediately left as if walking back on yourself, turn right at the Travelinn and the Tesco is at the end of the street about 200 yards.
If only they sold chilled beer!Filiss0 -
Victoria has loads of places. For example, there is a nice sandwich bar on the edge of the bus station in Terminal place. There is a Sainsbury's in Victoria Street, and also one on the way to the Coach station. It also has to be said that the M and S, and Boots prices at train stations are very much more than their usual pricesLet us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. - Proust0

Crewe Station - there's a lovely fresh sandwich shop quite close by. Turn left out the main entrance/exit - walk to the first junction - past the language school and there's a gas fire shop on the opposite corner - cross over the road and continue ahead. Incidentally you pass a chip shop ( and various other 'take-aways' which I haven't tried ) at this point which is very nice. Continue past a tyre outlet on the left then cross over the main road. You'll see many other eating places along this section, Chinese, Italian, Kebab outlets etc. The Sandwich shop is at the end of this row. Unfortunately it is only open ( as far as I know ) around lunchtime so your opportunity to use it is fairly limited. There is another chip shop on the same side of this road just on the opposite corner of the road which is very nice. Plenty of options and all about 5 minutes walk away. Enjoy
