Hello
Newbie to this board so I hope I'm in the right place. Have also done a search but still a little confused.
I am looking for a PVR for my in-laws for Xmas (they are 76 and 82 so something very simple). They have sky, so one option would be to pay for a sky+ box for them (£99 and £60 installation from what I can see). Is there a cheaper option?
I see you all seem to recommend Humas but the cheapest I can see is £130 (would this still be better than Sky+ though).
Or, would this one be ok for what they want http://www.amazon.co.uk/Daewoo-DSD9503TFPB-Freeview-Recorder-Playback/dp/B000Y3W2J0/ref=sr_1_2/275-4290396-1501112?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1225884121&sr=8-2 . I have some amazon vouchers so can get this for about £60.
For a very cheap option thats easy to use, what do you think?
It can record 2 channels or watch one, record one (if I understand that correctly), has 7 day TV guide but it doesn't mention series link. Is this standard or just not included?
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thank you
Edit to add: they all seem to talk about Freeveiw, I assume they will record the sky channels?

Get the Humax they are very easy to use and a reputation for quality
They can allow to recording and one play back and some occasions 2 recordings plus a 3rd channel
They also sensitive tuners so better in at picking up channels

I thought this was just a free view box, didn't realise it record too! We have V+ so never looked into this before.
One last question about that Humax one - it will record the sky channels won't it?
Thanks for the fast answer, I can get this one for less than £100 with my vouchers so will be very pleased! My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
If they have sky+ or a old sky dish (not the really old ones) Humax also do a pvr freesat box which has free HD so you can get a lot of free channels perhaps as yet not as good as freeview but it will ultimately have more channels as time progresses
You may need a HDTV to be able to get some of the content espeiclaly HD
Humax are one of the best freeview suppliers, Topfield are another but a little more expensive and harder to source
EDIT The Humax Freesat pvr isnt out yet it comes out later this month but offers 320GB hard drive0 -
They wont record sky. That is a different system no freeview box will take sky, As I said freesat box will take digital feed from your sky dish believe or not sky are not the only ones who provide satellite in UK. There are 1000's of channels available but you need specialist equipment and probably not up there street tbh
Freesat is the future

Hmmm, OK...all they want to be able to do is record the channels they currently have (on their sky package, whichever they may have). I will ask my OH tonight if they have a lot more than Freeview has as they downgraded their package recently.
I think my answer is:
If they want to record their current TV package, the only way is a sky+ box.
If they would be happy with just the freeview channels, get this Humax as in post #2.
I would expect the Freesat box coming out in Nov (post #4) will be expensive and probably complicated for them!
Does this sound about right?
Thanks for your help - I would have bought one that only did Freeview cos I didn't understand it and they/I might have been very dissapointed! :TMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -

Estimated price of Humax Freesat PVR is £299.000 -
Yes its around £299 it might sound a a lot but is suppose to be a very good pvr judging by the reviews and much better than the slow sky+ box0
-
Thanks both.
I think for what they want and the ease of it for them (man come in and set it up etc), I think I'll go with the £160 sky+ (unless I can wangle it cheaper!).
Thanks a million both for your help, you've saved me much disapointment and embarrassment! :beer:My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
The Humax are very easy to use and no subscription okay not as much choice as sky has
Its just a case of connecting the UHF aerial to the Humax and having the UHF to TV and connector a scart cable so when its turned on the TV will switch to Humax straight away
It has a EPG like sky showing whats coming on plsu a series link ie if you click on EPG for say Corrie it will ask for the full series or just that one, so you never need to record Corrie again
It has a search facility and genre link like Drama etc
I can guarantee once you have a Humax you would never give it up you cant say that for many other things, its the dogs dangles0 -
