Help Needed

Hello,

Im currently helping out my dad, who is going through a pretty nasty separation from his wife. He is trying to get out of the house as unscathed as possible and also seperate himself from their finances as she has always controlled them and has run up huge debts in his name without his knowledge! He has been so stupid!
Anyway he needs a basic bank account to put some of his savings into (he has a post office account that he wants to close and tranfer the monies into an account she has no knowledge of so she doesnt try and take the funds). But obviously he cannt apply for an account unless it goes to their home address! Something he cannot risk her finding out about (her and her mother are intersepting his post too!) He has been sleeping at mine recently, and i said i would try and help him out if i could by maybe opening a bank account for him using my address. But im finding all banks need to have confirmation of your address? obviously he has no record of living at mine as all bills etc will be in my name.
We just need an account in his name that will accept a bacs transfer from the post office.
Failing that could i open a joint account with my dad and then only need my address?
Any help would be appreciated, im not laundering money!! honestly!
Nadia

  • Can you add him onto one of your utility bills such as water or council tax (obviously you will lose your single person discount if you claim this currently)? My parents live with me and I have done this so they can get credit if necessary.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Are there any bills / existing accounts in your Dad's name where he could change the address to yours and then get a statement? This may get round it.

Here's a Halifax leaflet on ID and address confirmation:

    http://www.halifax.co.uk/SecurityandPrivacy/pdf/About%20You_29Feb08.pdf

    It may be that this:

    "Got a Problem
Don't worry if we’re unable to verify you
electronically and you are unable to
provide any of the standard documents.
We realise that you may not have a
passport or driving licence, or any bills or
    statements addressed to you because
accounts may be held in your partner's
    name.
There are other documents we might be
able to accept and we have other ways of
confirming your name and address such as
checking the Electoral register. So just tell
us your situation and we will advise you."

means that you could make a call and agree some sort of letter from you, combined with your council tax bill, may be a way round it. Ask them.
