RBS overdraft refused based on incorrect information

I've opened a new RBS current account and applied for an overdraft. I had to supply 3 months of statements from my previous bank account. Based on these statements, the overdraft was refused by the lending department because they say my old bank levied charges against me and bounced a direct debit.

I've checked this out and the 'bounced dd' is one that I reversed under the direct debit guarantee (BT billed me incorrectly). The 'chargies levied' can only possibly relate to negative interest of around £4, from using the agreed overdraft facility for very short periods (and well within the limit).

Has anyone any experience of challenging a lending decision with RBS? I'm not sure if it is worth the struggle.

You can appeal to RBS (attaching evidence that it was a BT mistake would help)
If they don't play ball, look elsewhere - they are far from the best.

I challenged it after being refused an account with them due to people entering my details incorrectly on their systems. It took a couple of weeks but I now have the account I want with all the services I want. Give it a shot.

Unless it's clearly been unpaid for lack of funds, which should be obvious from your statements, then there should no problem sorting it. Call someone at the branch and explain what you've said here. They can then re-refer it and should be able to get the o/d applied to the account.

Maybe they just did it in the first place because they wanted "some entertainment"
Practise what you preach or is that not the Tesco way?
  • RBS is a crazy place; I pop into the branch for other reasons and gentlemen at the desk told me that I had a pre-approved overdraft and a credit card. Even tired of all pre-approved stuff, decided to give it a go. An overdraft was instantly approved for £2500, and I got it. Before he could proceed with my credit card application, along came a manager and propose me a full review with upgrade, which is basically sell me another account for a fee. I’m an international travel, and didn’t mind get all those benefits. But a few minutes later my new CC application was refused: doesn’t make sense! In a matter of 20 minutes one application is accepted and other one refused!

It may well have been because it was within 20 minutes of each other? I'm not an expert on the banks, but could it have possibly been because you took the full overdraft available they felt you had too much available credit?
