Looking into buying some sort of memory card / flash card that goes in slot 1 to upgrade the uses of my daughters nintendo DS Lite. Apparently it enables you to play mp3's & mp4's, connect to internet via wi-fi connection and load games onto it, obviously only the ones you own
.
Came across UK based website (http://nintendo-ds.allack.co.uk/Extras/index.php?SubCategoryID=Memory%20Cards&ZoneID=UK) that sells them, but there are so many!! Do all of them do the above? Was thinking of a 2 or 4 gb, but does memory this card slow down application speeds?
Has anyone upgraded thier DS's like this before or any computer wizz kids here that can advise?

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I think what you are talking about is an M3 or R4 card

With a micro sd card of any size plugged into it (the m3 going straight into your ds games slot) you can use it as a multimedia system that can play games and access internet if you have the right software. The card itself is totally legal but as you are obviously aware. Downloading games and films to it is not. Using it is very easy and it is just a matter of downloading and transferring files to the sd card.0 -
Ah thanks! So, am i right in thinking that i need to buy a memory card and compatible software? If so, do you know what software i would need to buy &can you reccommend somewhere to buy it.

Both the M3 and R4 card have their own built in software so you can boot up movies, mp3's, mp4's and games. You need to buy a micro sd memory card although it can be cheaper to buy the M3 or R4 card as a bundle with a memory card. Obviously the more memory your card has the better although 2-4gb is probably adequate.0

OP if you buy it from that site you linked to then id use a credit card if you have one, im not saying the site is dodgy but its better to be on the safe side0

My DD has an R4 card in her DS, highly recommend it0

I am using an r4 too, which i got from ebay for about £10 about a year ago.
Be sure to get one with the latest firmware as mine wouldnt work when i backed up some of my newer games, i had to use a special program to edit them which is time consuming.
I highly reccomend it though as it plays music and videos very well.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, R4 sound good. 1 more question, ok 2 more...how do i know what the latest firemwire is and where can i buy it? Can't find it on play, amazon, maplins and a little reluctant to buy from shop in my first post (only planned to use it as an example!).
Ps...you guys are tops!!!November wins...a book, a designer handbag (worth £550 :T) and a game. I am now an addict and thank everyone for taking the time to share and post.0 -

R4s are considered a bit out of date now and are hard to get hold of. They will only handle cards up to 2gb, although that's about 40-50 games.
I've had no problems with the DSTT card, around $10 (£6ish) from dealextreme .com, although delivery takes up to 2 weeks:-

This is a good site for advice:-
