Planning USA Tour

Hello all,
I am looking into planning a USA tour for the Summer.
This is just a quick idea but I was thinking of doing something like this:
Fly to Washington, DC > Amtrak Train to Philly > Amtrak Train to New York City > Coach/Train or flight to Boston > Flight to Chicago > Flight to San Fran > Flight to Los Angeles > Train / Coach to San Diego.
Was just wondering if anyone had any good travel routes for traveling in the US? - Also do domestic flights in the US require you to go through immigration each time - hows it work?
Thanks

You seem to have covered the good routes
I take it there's a reason for not hiring a car (SFO to LA is a good driving route)
Look at China Bus for cheap coach travel
You do not need to go through immigration on US domestic routes.0 -
Hi BS,
We love visiting the US, we're back again next year, New England this time.
Great places on your itinerary but for me, driving through small town America is just such a treat, I wouldn't miss it for the world - you literally just don't know what you will encounter around the next corner. Usually some bizarre giant plastic vegetable, thinking about it.
And with your own wheels you can take off into the wilds. So if you have a licence, maybe you could work in at least one self-drive stage.
I can't begin to tell you how much fun it was driving around San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur etc in an open top Pontiac Firebird:j:rotfl:  .
Have a great trip, whatever you choose to do."Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm" (Sir Winston Churchill)0 -
You won't have to go through customs on the domestic flights0

Have you had a look at the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Forums? They've always been useful for me when I've been planning USA road trips and I've been given some really good advice in the past.
I really must get back on and start planning the next trip for the OH's Big 40!
Happy travelling.
