Kids invest safely

Hi learn ed folks
My kids 10 to 15 y o have received a £5k cheque each made out to them. To cash them I'll take them to building soc where they have accounts. However, I'd like them to be able invest their money safely & get a decent return e.g. bond guaranteeing capitol & index linked plus for 5 to 10 years. After visiting high st banks & a building soc, I've next to no feedback. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it as I've never had a lump sum to invest.
