2 gang, double dimmer (1000watt)

Is it possible to get them? We did have a double dimmer running 8 halogen lights on each (50 watt bulbs), so 16 in total. Yesterday it blew and the electrician said that the dimmer was running at max and ideally we needed a 1000 watt double dimmer.....he said they were really hard to get hold of....and he is so so right! Impossible is the word. Anyone got any ideas? He did mention that one option would be to change all the bulbs to 35 watt???
Anyone point me in the right direction?

You must be rich if you can afford to use 800watts just to light a room. Just after I fitted out my 10mt long room with halogen lights (no dimmers), the cost of electricity sky rocketed. I reduced the lamp size to 35w and just had a 50w over where I sit, for reading purposes. Most of your lamps will almost certainly be for decoration rather than light output, so lowering the wattage of most of them will not really affect the general appearance of the room. My lights are on four circuits spread over 16 lights, so in any case, I have more flexibility over the amount of electricity used. It is not easy to see which are the lower wattage lamps.
I believe that they are now selling 25w halogens.I can afford anything that I want.

If you go for the lower wattage bulbs I would like to recommend a dimmer switch with soft start, I got mine at B&Q.
I used to change GU10 bulbs regularly but since installing the soft start switch they seem almost immortal!
