Trying for Debenhams refund/exchange after 28 days

Just joined today so this is my first post! Please be kind. After an exasperating trip to town yesterday I wondered if anyone has had a successful experience trying to return an item to Debenhams after 28 days. I was trying to exchange a Ben Sherman T-shirt bought for my husband which didn't fit very well. I had the receipt showing I purchased it for £20. I was flabbergasted to be told that the T-shirt had been reduced to £1 and that was all they could offer me despite my receipt. This was backed up by the Supervisor . I was even more angry as I had taken it back a few weeks earlier but was at that time told by the assistant to choose something to exchange it for as they did not give any credit vouchers. At that time I was laden down with kids and shopping and so expressly asked if I would be given the full value of my purchase when I came back next time. She said there would be no problem. GRRRRRRR I did ask MIss smiley supervisor if I could be put on the priority listing for their £1 shopping specials as she assured me items were often reduced to £1. Hmmm
Would be grateful if anyone could advise whether it is worthwhile trying to take it further. I feel a principle at stake here. I know shoppers are slightly at the mercy of retailers as far as returns go but thought that goodwill usually persevered.

Hi,
I presume that it is 28 days since you bought it? It is the same at a lot of shops. Only ones I have no problem with are John Lewis and Next who seem to refund without receipt as long as in season.
Could try a different shop but unless you a lady who does not check the date on the receipt not alot you can do. Could you give it someone else as a present?0 -
Take the hit I'm afraid!
I had a similar experience with a jacket a few years ago that was reduced from £80 to £5. No joy.
Also as an aside my wife had a problem with Debenhams whereby a sales assistance didn't credit her card when she took something back..... she charged again. As far as I know this still hasn't been sorted as the case appeared to go cold in INDIA!0 -
You are highly unlikely to get a refund after 28 days unless the T-Shirt is faulty. Why didn't you get a full refund the first time? Debehams are usually really helpful so you might have some success in taking it further, but really it is you in the wrong not them.0

I know it's not the right thing to do but why don't you look for a flaw in the item and take it back as faulty....then they HAVE to give you your money back. If you have the receipt then you are entitled to your money back regardless and the law does protect you there.
I'm not suggesting in anyway you make a flaw......i'm a good girl....

I took back a top I had been wearing regularly for six months to TK Maxx - it had some fade stains on the front (i can be very clumsy when brushing my teeth) - they gave me a full cash refund, no questions asked :j !

vvv naughty....have done it myself though bought a waterproof jacket for £39.99 next day it was on offer for £19.99 i was gutted..until i notice da piece of velcro had mysteriously come adrift....got my money back and bought another one at the lower price.....not very ethical i know but though they would have mentioned the day before at 4pm, "come back tomorrow and get it for half price "so did not feel too guilty0

Thanks for all your replies. I don't have the nerve to accidently pull a seam or whatever. Live in a smallish place and this is the only Debenhams around. I think the T-shirt could be appearing on an EBay auction sometime soon!
I still think the reduction of items to £1 is just a scam by Debenhams to avoid paying out or even exchanging at the higher price. I can't believe that they have anything for £1 actually selling in their stores. I may write to their HO if I am able to summon up the energy.
I think my New Year resolution is going to be never ever again buy clothes for my husband who I know will not get around to trying them on for three weeks!
Makes you think carefully about what you buy as christmas pressies though. I think I will stick to gift vouchers in future and let people get more for their money in the sales.
