I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was rather more to do with that you can't enforce debts against under 18s. Give them as many credit cards and overdrafts as they like, but you haven't got a chance of enforcing any debts they don't want to pay.

(Of course, many grown adults are of the same demeanour, but that's for a different thread. ;))

Yes....not with a line of credit but you can have a MasterCard and use it like a credit card, the only difference is that you have to top it up like a pay as you go mobile phone, so you can only spend what you have...not the bank's money like a std credit card.

These guy's will give you a card and there are many other companies out there who will sort you out, or go to your bank and ask for a Visa Debit card, this can be used in the same fashion except you will not have any credit facilities on it, Lloyds TSB issue a Visa Debit to under 18's as do Barclays Bank and Alliance and Leicester (under 21 account) so you can have an adult-type Visa minus any credit facility.

    Good Luck
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

    From APACS
    Credit cards
If you are under 18 you can normally only get a credit card as an additional cardholder – for example on a parent’s credit card account. This is because

under-18s are not permitted by law to enter into a contract, so cannot be granted access to credit in their own right. Some credit card companies, however, will not give credit cards to under-18s even as additional cardholders.

Some issuers may refuse to allow under 18s to be additional users on the grounds that it exposes them to the accusation of marketing credit products to under 18s. This may even be a criminal offence if I recall correctly.

Banks don't usually bother about the threat of unenforcability - they can always rely on the age-old collection strategy of harassment, intimidation and vexatious litigation, but as you say, that's for a different thread ;)

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

Which is pretty much why nobody would give credit to a child. Because they can't be obliged to pay it back.

If you need to pay with credit card for something why not ask someone with a CC to buy it and give them the cash? Always worked for me.
