  • I was having a think about this last night and another thing to look at, particularly Xmas gifts is whether there are any small priced gifts.

My first Xmas with BS, there were lots of stocking fillers in the £3-50 - £5.00 bracket. They were really useful as guests would buy them for teachers, or their children's friends or to make up gifts to a particular value to qualify for a freebie. I even managed to sell to one ward at the local hospital - about 30 £5 gifts - even giving a discount made me a decent profit for very little effort.

The following year, there was a change at the top and all the small bottles disappeared and the Xmas gifts start at £7-50 with only one or two choices at this level. I did a lot worse that year as lots of people don't want to spend a fortune. I lost the custom of the hospital.

On an everyday of the year party, there will always be a couple of guests who are skint and are there to be sociable - often they will buy one small item so as not to be embarassed - look through both the catalogues and see what is available for such guests. They may spend a little but if there are only high priced items, then they won't buy anything.

  • Neither are The BodyShops.

I didn't say that Body Shop products were animal tested, BUT Body Shop are now owned by L'Oreal, who are not renowned for their ethical policy.

I've got no business posting on this thread really, as I'm not a consultant, just a customer. I didn't realise Body Shop had been taken over by L'oreal (one of the worst offenders, actually!)... but I do buy Body Shop stuff because I believed their products to be cruelty free - and they are more readily available than Beauty Without Cruelty (which is really my favourite). I just wanted to add, I found out a few years ago that Body Shop soaps were not cruelty free. Don't know if that's still the case, but it put me off.
  • It disappointed a lot of people, and god knows what Anita Roddick was thinking ... I don't actually find BS that cheap actually.

I don't know if we're helping poor Nicki much here! I suggest that you contact both companies, compare the blurb, and see which suits you best. One other thing to consider is how many BS or VV consultants there are in your area.

Personally, I never buy anything TBS anymore since they were taken over by L'Oreal. It makes them 50% owned by Nestle, and I'm one of the many Nestle boycotters. A lot of young mums may also do this and this might affect your ability to sell. EDIT: On that basis, I would question TBSAH's "ethical" stance.

Although I find VV a bit on the expensive side, their range is fantastic, which should mean more earning opportunities for you and their offers are amazing. My NCT branch had a fundraiser party a short while ago and we all ended up spending a fortune, so much so that the donation from the consultant was nearly £100.

Call me naive but I recently started with TBSAH and I really need some clarity. I was under the impression it was just the make up of Body Shop that is owned by L'Oreal, can anyone confirm this for sure.

Ok, done a bit of research and this is what I found.

The BodyShop is approved by the CCIC, Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, to you and me the leaping bunny logo.

They are listed as having all of the following marks against their name.

Companies marked with a heart are the original signatories to the
Standard of 1996. Companies marked with a diamond
have chosen to license the logo, so you can find the international ‘leaping bunny’ on their products or in-store displays. Companies marked with a square are cruelty free subsidiaries of parent companies that do not comply with the Standard.

I guess this last label applies most to Body Shop if it is totally owned by L'Oreal which I can see on the info that they are.

So conclusion being, despite the company being parented by a prolific animal tester according to the CCIC they are maintaining the ethics of Anita Roddick. Good on them and please please keep it up.

Thank you for that Lola :)
Hi Nicki :) I have done both Vie at Home and The Body Shop at Home and to be honest as much as I love Vie and all it's lovely products, I found it so expensive to run that unfortunately I never made any money :(
Body shop offers so much to it's hostesses and customers as well as being very cheap to run, lots of free goodies and of course earnings :)
Hope that helps you, I know what you're feeling right now - I have been in exactly your position :)
    Good luck,
    Jenny x
