Post Code on Car Insurance

Right here we go.... I have recently moved to Manchester and am now wanting to buy a car as I have a job. But when I enter my postcode in Manchester I get quotes of around £800-£1000. This is crazy, but expected as im only 23. But when I enter my old home address (where my mum still lives) in Derby I get quotes of around £400. This is more like it but as stated I dont live or even work there so the car will hardly if ever stay over night there. So am I allowed to take car insurance out at my old address or is this fraud or something like that? Also my driving licence has my old address on it. I will appreciate any feedback on this matter or any other tips people have. Cheers, Joe.

Your driving licence address should be your permanent residence.

Car insurance should be at the address the vehicle spends the most time – sorry but that’s gonna be Manchester!

Basicly your insurance will not be valid if you give an incorrect address. They will let you buy it but if it came to claiming you would be left without cover. Quite simpliy the manchester post code area has a higher risk than the derby.

You driving licence shold have your home address on it its upto a £1000 fine if it does not. But in pratice I have only just changed mine from my parents address as I was always moving.

Unfortunately you will have to pay the Manchester price if that is where you will be living. If you lied and something happened they would ask "Why your car was there?" I also think you will have to change the address on your driving licence but I'm not 100% sure on that.
It is a postcode lottery, I live 5 mins drive from my Mum and Dad's in the same area and I pay more than I would if I lived with them.

I suppose it's cheaper in Derby because there are less cars there what with the Twirleys. (My Grandmother and her family live in Derby)

The problem is that Manky has a far higher theft and accident rate than rural Derbyshire. If you take the risk and still insure at home but the car is stolen in Manky then you could find payout refused.

My sister is in the same situation. She's 30+, moved from Kent to Manc and her premium went from £290 to £650.

As others have said, you'll have to insure it for the Manchester address. While it might be tempting to lie, it is quite an easy one to spot by the claims handlers.

For instance, you need to provide contact details for them to phone you about the claim - they will be Manchester numbers presumably. Theft of vehicle from a hotel car park could be passed off as a business trip to manchester. Much harder to explain a theft from a residential side street.
