Dont pay by cash if receipt not supplied.
If the rent is due weekly the landlord legally has to use/supply a rent book which would be proof of any funds paid if signed by him with each transaction. If you pay by cheque or standing order there would still be a trail back to him.O0 -

I would always give a receipt if paid other than by SO or DD via the bank (my current tenants cannot seem to get this together for some reason  ), even if I have to send it by post. Useful for my own records, as well as theirs - if they were that organised that is! Have you asked for receipt? Maybe they just haven't thought of it (a bit disorganised like my tenants maybe  )0

As stated legally in England and Wales only if you are paying the rent weekly is the landlord obliged to provide a rent book.
Nearly every landlord I've dealt with would provide a written receipt if a tenant paid in cash. However that is just to avoid problems. (Believe it or not landlords' have accountants too.)I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0
