Trust & Estate Tax Return (SA900)

Does anyone know of any free software that can be used to submit a Trust & Estate Tax Return (SA900)?
The HMR&C software does not do it! but the date for paper submissions is nevertheless 31st October the same as other Returns! Hardly seems fair to me to have that date as a cut-off, without offering any software to file online!

in the hope that someone might be able to help

I don’t have access to online services so don’t know the answer.
However, this link suggests that you can do Returns online.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/complete-trust-estate.htm
Have you registered for online services as a trustee as opposed to personally?
Thanks for your reply - yes I have registered as a trustee and I can gain access to the site and view the record but there is no means of submitting a Return online using HMR&C software (I have confirmed this with HMR&C Trusts at Nottingham).
I have cut and pasted the following extract from the link you gave me:
"Benefits of online filing
You can complete and file a Trust and Estate return online using commercial software – some of this is free and some you’ll have to pay for.
If you submit the return online the software will automatically calculate any tax payable. You'll also have longer to file the return than if you use a paper form - you'll have until 31 January following the end of the tax year instead of until 31 October."
So they give you until 31 January to do it online but not the means to do so!0 -
How long have you had the return? If it was issued late then you may have an extension to the 31st October deadline for paper filing. The Online Services helpdesk will answer any enquiries about online filing. Their number is 0845 60 55 999.Don't mess with pensioners. :cool:0

It wasn't issued late but there have been reasons why it wasn't possible to get all the information and facts together until recently and I hadn't realised that HMR&C didn't provide a facility to submit online until I tried doing it. I have spoken to the help desk and they have confirmed that I will need to use commercial software.0 -
All these are available to use for SA900 Trust returns. But which is cheapest and easiest to use ? Does anyone have experience of this? I manage the returns for a very small family trust.

I looked into this in the Summer, and believe that one of the Taxcalc Trust products would do it:
http://taxcalc.com/products/2008/personal_products.asp
but didn't purchase because it seemed expensive. I decided to do a paper return- though I find the calculations well beyond my ability.
I left mine until 31 Oct, and phoned them to say I could deliver by hand (50 mile drive to Nottingham) if absolutely necessary. They re-assured me that the penalty for a late return would only be levied if I actually owed tax (due on 31 Jan).
So I posted mine, and it probably arrived a couple of days late. I think I've got away with it, but your post has reminded me to get back to them, because I need the assessment to make absolutely sure I don't owe any tax.
In general, I think the staff working in Nottingham Trusts are far more helpful than in the personal part of self-assessment. I'd give them a ring.0 -
I've got exactly the same issue. I've got two SA900's to complete online (by 31.01.09) and only just found out that you have to buy 3rd party software rather than use the HMRC software.
Has anybody got experience of those software providers listed. I understand that:-
Andica
CCH
Forbes
Keytime
Lagstio
rfa
Truetax
don't support SA900's but has anybody any experience of the remaining providers? I'm looking for the easiest to use but don't want to spend too much.
Thanks in advance!! :beer:0 -
From my experience Digita do a good one although information is limited on the HMRC about them0

I would do it by hand and before the 31st October. If this is a problem, I would use an accountant. They would charge quite reasonable amounts depending on the complexity, and possibly less than the software. they would also be aware of anything you could offset against tax.0

I've just used Quality Management Software product to make an SA900 return in time for 31st Jan. Cost £9.99. I had a slight technical problem which I phoned them about leaving a message 11pm Sunday eve. They called back Monday morning and quickly resolved the problem. The product is "just" a big Excel spreadsheet, but does what's needed.
Low cost and good back up service!0
