Outlook Express backup

Sorry if this has been asked before.
2 Separate but related questions re Outlook Express.

I think that OE stores all emails in some unconventional way.

1) What is the best way to back up all my emails in a way that I can read them easily on another PC as a guest user (e.g while travelling).

2) Is there a way in which I can have a mail client working out of a USB memory stick and have all emails saved there so I can simply plug into any PC and continue sending/receiving from where I left off.

From one coffee lover to another! :coffee:

To back up your Outlook Express files, you need to go to the store directory and archive the various .dbx files, to a safe place of your choice i.e. CD.

In OE, do Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder to find the exact location on your PC. Copy also the folders.dbx file otherwise it can be difficult to import them back into OE using File, Import, Messages. ;)

Regarding your second question, you may want to try using Portable Thunderbird on a USB Flash drive. I have no experience of this application but I would assume that once set up with your e-mails imported from OE, it would act as a fully portable e-mail client and keep your private e-mails off any PC that you may use on your travels. i.e. you would not have to import your files into the OE on the machine that you are using.

  • Hi ya,

Well, i found one solution to your question 2.

    http://mobility.shaneland.co.uk/

Basically, if you're familiar with Mozilla Thunderbird, then, this will seem like a good solution. It basically resides on your USB memory source (ie. Ipod, memory stick, etc). It stores your emails and contacts also. Whenever you want to use it, just put it into a Windows based machine, and you're off to the races.

    Good luck!

I dont think you cam double click on an email as they are stored all crammed together in a .dbx file in some strange format..
    unless I misunderstood...

hmm.... sorry but I dont think it works like that.. I mean the .dbx file would contain ALL emails (of a specified folder e.g. "Inbox") and I dont think you can open a single email on its own.

    Can anybody else confirm this?

Yes if you save a email it has the extension of .eml now if you take an email from your PC that you have saved in a folder and transfer that to another PC just like any other program you can and it will open with the program associated with it.

Just like a jpg file or bmp or xls or anyother file it can be read as long as the recipient pc has the program associated with that file.

So burn and email to disk or put on usb drive or floppy take to a mates house and then double click the file and it will open with OE

..not sure how I would be able to back up all my emails with this method..
According to what you say, I'd have to open each email and save it individually...
Considering I have a few thousands emails, dont think it's a practical solution, but thanks anyway :xmassmile
