Can I drive my OH's car?

We have 2 cars. My OH is a policy holder and main driver on both cars although I drive one of the cars every day and he uses the other.
My car has fully comp insurance and we’re both on the policy (me obviously as the second driver). The 2nd car only has tft and I’m not on the policy at all. I was told that I could actually drive the 2nd car with my OH’s permission as I am insured fully comp on the 1st car. Is that true?
Many thanks

It's best to regret things you have done rather than those you have not...

You need to check that your policy specifically allows you to drive other vehicles with the owner's permission.
Some insurance companies have started taking that out of their policies although I have just renewed with Churchill and it is still included.0 -
I agree, defo need to check with your insurance company. Normally if you are full comp you are tpft on any other, but as your not the main driver I'm not sure it would apply!!!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

I believe that because you are not the main 'named' driver you will not be covered for other cars.
noite that even if you were, SOME insurance companies are removing this benefit from their policies - so everyone should check!!0 -

Exceptionally good point there. Have just re-read my insurance and you are right. My husband who is a named driver cannot drive other cars on my policy, only the policyholder (me) can.
I would therefore say that no, the OP cannot drive her OH's car.0 -
Thanks everyone, I will phone the insurance people later on today.

You might even find it reduces the premium if you add a named driver to a policy - it does sometimes if the additional driver is reckoned to be either no more of or actually less of a risk than the main driver. Doesn't work if the additional driver is a newly qualified 17 yo!Signature removed for peace of mind0

It's not even as good as that!
Most insurance companies will only cover the minimum required by law - Third Party only - Fire and Theft cover are seen as extras.
The moral - read your Policy and Schedules carefully.

Yep - the driving other cars is ONLY allowed (where permitted on the Insurance Certificate) by the POLICYHOLDER, not named drivers and even then for minimum TP Only0

I had never really looked before because my OH can drive other cars on his own insurance policy but glad I am aware of it now.
We would only ever use it in an absolute emergency, it is far to risky really.
Did you know that if you test drive a car from a dealer you could be driving it under this clause of your own insurance, not the dealers, if you test drive it alone? Our dealer now has "unaccompanied driver insurance" (at least thats what he told me when I questioned him earlier this year) but we test drove our previous car alone without realising we were driving on our own insurance, insurance which at the time my OH actually didn't have as he was only a named driver on my policy.0 -
The other problem you may have is that you've stated that you drive the other car every day whilst your OH drives his own car, yet he's named as the main driver on both vehicles. This could leadto his insurance company refusing to pay out on a claim, as he is not the main driver of the car - you are. If you drive the car more than he does, you should be the main driver and the policy should be in your name. Is there any reason why you are not the main driver and the policy isn't in your name?In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
