If you only need it mainly for internet and maybe some other basic functions (word processing etc), then a netbook is probably all you need. Something like the ASUS EeePC or an Acer One. Have a look here :http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=5&cat=10&subcat=2619.

Alot of these Linux instead of Windows XP/Vista to keep the cost down, although you can get them with WIndows as well. Hope that helps.

Thanks, its for my son and I did suggest 1 of those small notebook computers, but he said he would prefer a "proper laptop"

I can never understand why people recommend netbooks as a general laptop option. They're great if you need to travel with it but why suffer a nine inch screen, limited flexibility, and a sub size keyboard for very close to the same price as will buy a regular laptop??

Use www.dmxdimension.com to find the best current dell deals, but try to avoid anything with a celeron as for a few pounds more you can get a dual core processor. Minimum 2GB RAM too for running vista.

    Also, try www.dell.co.uk/outlet
  • I have to agree with pgilc. For the job they were designed to do, netbooks are great. They offer great portability, good battery life etc. But I wouldnt want to be looking at a 9" screen for any length of time. I would get a C2D processor with 2GB of ram and a 15" screen. £300 should get you one, if not now then very soon one xmas deals come in thick and fast.
  • If you want a proper laptop eg one full sized with a DVD player, try
    Ebuyer:

The machine has a decent spec for the price and is a good brand. If you were willing to pay a little extra you would have a much wider choice; also there may be a lot of bargains around after Xmas, what with end of range stock etc

Yes, with some careful checking and maybe waiting a week or two, 2GB and a Core 2 Duo for around £300 is definitely viable.

I would repeat however, avoid anything trying run vista with 1GB RAM, and anything with a Celeron.
