Can anyone advise me if it's possible to haggle for a Next sofa?
  • Am about to buy a tumble dryer and a dishwasher. Have got my eyes on a Bosch SMS40C12GB dishwasher at £310 at John Lewis, and either a Bosch Classix WTE84106GB tumble dryer at £299 or an AEG Lavatherm T65270AC dryer at £369. I have a small amount of vouchers for John Lewis to use so that will knock a small amount of money off. But just wondered if John Lewis are the kind of place you're likely to get any kind of deal when buying 2 appliances and spending £600-650? If anyone has any experience of doing a deal there, could you share your tips and advice please?!

    Thanks!

You won't get anywhere with trying to haggle with JL if the good are perfect & not damaged/B grade in any way.

The amount you're spending is pretty small in the scheme of things. Plus JL offer extended guarantees along with free delivery, so this makes buying from them pretty worthwhile indeed compared to perhaps saving just a few pounds elsewhere.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

They'll price match if you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

I've sucessfully haggled at JL, but it was with returned stock.

I haven't tried, but I would imagine that there is a certain level of flexibility instore. I would bet that the staff have targets for selling Next store cards etc, so maybe paying through one of them would help things?

I tried to haggle in the Next, but with no luck so far. Having said that, I might be just doing it wrong ((

Thinking of buying a new TV, and the set I've pretty much decided on, is the same price (£489) at quite a few places, online and instore.

I also think this set is an end of line set, and has since been superceded, so stores may be trying to get rid of that stock.

That said, is it possible to haggle for a discount, playing Currys/PC World off against the same item being available at Amazon and John Lewis, for the same price?

If I end up having to pay full whack, I'll probably get it from JL, with the 5 year guarantee, but had hoped that with a little knowledge and pursuasion, I may be able to bargain some discount at Currys/PC World instead?

    Any advice/tips are welcome.

    Cheers

    MJ

My advice would be to just go straight to JL to get the benefit of their extended guarantee, free delivery & the quality of the service they offer, which in no way can be compared to places such as Currys.

If you're particularly looking for an end of line set then check out Richer Sounds, as they often have a range of end of line tv's in stock & they do have a very good reputation.

There may be no harm in trying to haggle with John Lewis, but I doubt you would get anything off though. Get a My John Lewis Card though as I was emailed an offer for £5 back on £50 and something is better than nothing!

You would have more luck haggling with Curry's etc if price is same but the value of discount will probably only pay for the warranty you get anyway with JL!

Haggled in SpecSavers last week. DH needed varifocals and I managed to knock the price down. I listed all offers they had advertised on site and then discussed them. E.g. they offered Standard varifocals with the frame from the certain range, we were buying more expencive frame (from the different range) and I asked if discount could still be applied. Then they also had "2 for 1" offer and I asked for a discount if we do not take a second pair of glasses. Managed to knock down around £70 - good deal for me!
