New desktop -unable to write to CD/DVD drive

Bought a new Packard Bell desktop which I have got Pinnacle software on to write my CDs. I've tried using the route I've used before on my very broken laptop (still at Evesham being fixed after a month) which is Start, All Progs, Instant Cd&DVD, Instant CD&DVD, Create Data disc, then I go find what I want to write to disc, try to write to it and get A destination device could not be found, despite the fact the DVD/CD writer is sitting in the list of available drives as E drive. The other route of drag and click to the disc writer icon on the desktop doesn't work either.

Can somebody throw some light on this - its driving me nuts!

Thanks

  • is it an internal or external cd writer?
Can you see it in device manager in control panel?
    Are the drivers installed correctly?

It's an internal CD/DVD writer that came installed on the desktop, which is a straight out of the box type jobby, not custom made.

On My Computer it is showing listed under Devices With Removable Storage as E drive.

I don't have Device Manager in my control panel.

No idea about the drivers, I would have thought they would have been sorted by the manufacturer?

Maybe a faulty drive.. it does happen.. also is there any clear tape or a transit screw
that may hold it all in place for delivery.. just make sure of that aswell
  • Check you ASPI layer. Can be done through Nero Info Tool if you have it. If not go here, download the ASPI package and run aspichk.exe. If it shows errors then install the ASPI drivers for your OS.

Hope not! This computer was bought as an emergency replacement for an Evesham laptop which had to be sent back to be fixed and is still with them after over a month GRRRRRR!!!

I think the drive is working OK, as we had to write installation disks (which we only did a couple of days ago), and I've just checked one of them and it has stuff written on it, of course I've not tried reloading it.

I don't think it's the drive at fault, more the software isn't looking in the right place for it.

Not saying it yours but stranger things have happened... but as you
say It could be a driver thing so stick on the software to rule out
    a mechanical failure....

Oh lord, now I can't install the aspi software! I've downloaded it, gone through the Start, Run, located the Install.bat file clicked OK and it brings up a DOS screen with X86, XP32, XP64 listed and Press any key to continue.... I hit any key, the DOS screen disappears and then nothing happens. Tried running aspichk.exe but it's telling me aspi isnt installed properly.....!!

Hang on a Mo if its new I would get on to the supplier/manufacturer helpline
as they coulc say you may invalidate some kind of warranty (they can be quite stoopid about installs and stuff), they may even talk you through a simple solution
