movement of walls

I was wondering if anyone had problems of movent of adjoining walls in their property.I live in a semi built in the 1930's,moved in in 1999.I had the upper bedroom plastered then and decorated and by 2004 4mm gaps appeared in the ceiling and adjoining walls which ran down the stairway walls.
At great expense I had a report from a structural engineer and had ties put in but am wondering if this is sufficient?

  • I suppose one can only suggest you wait and see. If it was a serious subsidence I think it would have shown long before now. Can you tell if the cracks are more than plaster deep? Has next door got the same problem? Its been very dry this year here in Essex and the clay here makes for a bit of cracking in my 1930's house but they all disappear when the weather gets wetter.

Are the cracks also exteranal? If so you could monitor them.

Get some peices of Glass cut approx 100mmx20mm, and stick them on the wall (bricks)over the cracks, with some strong adeshive, gripfill, glue gun etc. and if there is further movement you will notice the glass crack.

ps you can also do this internaly.

    Hope this helps.
A thankyou is payment enough .
