It took me several tries before I managed to quit smoking for good, but I've now been smoke free since 2004 :)I found herbal cigarettes (which you can buy in most health food shops) helpful, because mine was very much a psychological addiction in that I used smoking as a method of relaxation, and with these you get the action of smoking without the nicotine... they also don't taste too great, which I think helps wean you off somewhat too!
I also found the fact that my ex reckoned I couldn't do it a very motivating factor as I was determined to prove a point to him, lol.;)
Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice. :(

Illegitimi Non Carborundum!!!

Hi there

Please please give NHS direct a call, sorry i dont have the number, for help.
I have now been a non-smoker for just over 6 months and I smoked 20+ a day for 26 years!!
I couldnt have done it without the help I got from this helpline. They organised for me to attend a helpgroup once a week in the evening for 6 weeks which was brilliant. The 1st week you are a smoker and then you all give up together on the 2nd week and the motivation of belonging to the group is amazing (even though I thought it would be a complete load of c***!!)
They take your oxygen reading every week as well which is a real incentive as you can see the difference almost immediately.
I was also put on a course of Champix tablets which are FANTASTIC, even though the side effects arent wonderful, SO worth it.
So I can now say I am a non-smoker and the freedom of that is so brilliant, not worrying when you can light up your next fag.
i didnt even want to stop smoking, it was my DD who wrote the number down for me off the tv and I was just doing it to shut her up!! Never in a million years did I think i could do it. If I can then anyone can.
GOOD LUCK with it.
Karen :D
• Try entering how many you smoke a day and how much they cost into http://www.moneysavingmotivator.com/smoking.html to see how much money you are wasting on it... I quit on the 5th and have saved £116 so far :D

Hello matty69

I'll move your thread to the 'Health & Beauty' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

• Hi there - all the best with your efforts to stop smoking :j
The number for NHS 24 is 08454 242424 - they can give you some advice, and also point you in the direction of your local smoking cessation serivce - they will really be worth a call, for all sorts of support. You could also try and get this information from your GP.

good luck - it will all be worth it!! ;)

• Just a line to say good luck. I have heard good things about Allen Carr too by the way....

You can do it!
• Hi, I quit 8 years ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever done - and the most worth it! I went cold turkey, but had the support of a bulletin board online (http://groups.msn.com/freedomfromtobaccoquitsmokingnow/). It was their support along with all the info I found on there that kept me. The first three days are physical, then you start the mental battle... and if I can recommend one thing then it is to get support. Few can do it alone.

ETA: I've also heard good things about Alan Carr, though I haven't read his book about quitting smoking. I did read his diet book and must say he does have some strange ideas about that, but about smoking I think he's right on the money.

matty - try this thread over in DFW. Check some of the links in the first post, then read through (if you have time). They are a lovely bunch over there and have helped many people to stop with support and advice :)

Good luck

I done it via medication - Champix

Countless failures on patches and cold turkey - so far 10 months on the first (and hopefully last) attempt with champix

And SUPPORT - from those fighting the same battle or who have fought it and won

Wanting to quit is the first step - good luck xxx
