disability buss pass

hi, i have heard a whisper that people who get middle/high rate care dla are entitled to a free bus pass? I thought it was for people who received high rate mobility dla. I know in Scotland middle care qualifies, but am not sure of England. Any ideas?

(not that i get to go on the bus much, but it would be good to know!)

many thanks, i did that, and found this -

    aged 60 or over
    blind or partially sighted
    profoundly or severely deaf
    without speech
have a permanent disability which seriously impairs your ability to walk. This includes blue badge holders.
    have a learning disability
are without arms or have the long term loss of the use of both arms
disqualified from driving on medical grounds. This includes some people with severe mental disorder

i am still not sure though, as someone with mental health difficulties, where i would fit in, if at all? Although, now that i think about it, my nephew has one (in scotland) for aspergers, and i wouldnt know where that fit in with the criteria either!

Yes my husband gets ones as he can no longer drive and gets higher rate mobility.

Also we only found out after him having the thing for a year and half  as he is on higher rate mobility he can get bus pass that allows a companion with him to travel for free as well. Not just a carer but any one who accompanies him.

So he now has to trade in his bus pass for a newer one. It is great as now we can catch the bus at the end of the road to some of his appointments which means the stress of driving and find somewhere to park is now gone for me. As it is in the middle of a town. Just need to take his wheel chair with us and we are sorted.

glad to hear you are finding it useful Calley, i didnt know about the free carer pass!

So, to clarify (hopefully other mse'ers will benefit as well) if someone is on middle care dla and low mobility, then can obtain a disability pass? Or does it depend on the reason for dla?

Am so sorry for being slow on the uptake with this, i am more than a little confused! My usual pa is off on maternity leave, and i would usually ask her to ring the council etc to find out!

    Jetcat,

Neither did we until I read something in the local council newsletter at the weekend.

So husband is sorting it out now by sending proof. Not sure what proof they wanted first time around as it was over a year and half ago.

Can't answer the rest of your query. If you are unable ring the council are you able to check out there web pages they might have the answer there for you.

    Take care

I don't get a bus pass. It is all on my husbands so I can't travel with out him.

So even if it existed you would not be able to use it with the disabled person being with you.

If you go to the official website for the cards, the government one, it tells you who precisely is eligible:

    Free bus travel link

The only way that I can think of that a person with a mental health problem might fit in is under "if you have a disability, or have suffered an injury, which has a substantial and long-term effect on your ability to walk". Perhaps if you would normally need to have someone with you to motivate you to walk, or to ensure you were concentrating on crossing roads not thinking of something else or to keep you safe when walking if your mental health distracts you when you're out. But it would depend on your personal mental health needs.
