paying for childcare whilst volunteering

  • No. Both applicants must work 16+ hours in remunerative employment to claim help towards childcare costs.

As this is effectively a training course there may be some help available from the local education authority, but definitely not from TCO.

    Thanks for the clarification.
  • Are you doing the course with your local college?? They shoud be able to tell you if you will get help towards the costs. I do hope they will be able to help you, as it is nice to see people who want to get on in life and train to get a good job.

    Good luck :)

  • hi olivia it is through the local college but i have not yt applied for the course as im not sure yet if it is financially viable for us, do you know if they can still give me advice on this even though im not a student yet?
  • Yes I would still contact them and they will be able to help you. Then it will give you a better idea of if you will be able to go for it or not.

I know our local college does help with childcare costs - they helped me a couple of yrs ago when I went back. I got all of my childcare paid for. Then when I went back the 2nd yr, I got told they could only afford to pay 75% of the costs - so I had to pay the other 25%.

I would definietly ring them up and get all of the info. Let us know how you get on with it. I really do hope that they can help you

I used childcare vouchers (busybees) from hubby's employer combined with the non-means tested funding for a 3yo in a similar situation.
  • olivia i have managed to find a placement where i can take dd with me for free which is great, the only thing i have to consider now is that i am in paid employment in the retail sector at the minute just 2 days a week, so i need to work out whether i can afford to give this up and just do my placement 3 days a week or still work my two days paid and then do my 3 days unpaid which isnt really what i wanted to do but o well
