Is it written in a way someone could type it up for him? 80 pages wouldn't take long for a typist and it would be presented in a professional way too. It might be money better spent than him trying to use yet another new way of doing things (though he could try that too).

Also if he's going to do more typing, if he uses OpenOffice - version 2 it saves automatically every few words (though I would think in Word you can enable this to happen too). Of course that doesn't help if he then deletes it but he could make a copy every day for instance.

    Hi
I am afrid the book is quite long- the 80 pages was only a bit of it.
I have been encouraging him to use the computer - but I dont have loads of time ( nor the patience ) to type it up for him. He was getting the hang of word and was feeling quite safe with it so I said it would be ok to type most of the wording up and I was going to work on it when I had more time- and to be honest felt better. If he was doing a web type thing we could maybe do it a bit slower- and I thought it would look nicer. It is also to send to his brother in new zealand so I tought a web link would help. You have all been great- I just wish I knew a bit more myself !
Thanks FRAN ( your always so helpful). I had got him to save it everytime but well delete button happens it seems !
  • Try this, you might have an old version laying dormant on your hard disk, and this might get it back

For a website he might try http://freewebs.com which is quite simple to use, I'm not sure what the limit is though if he intends to put a lot of writing there. Someone did put a link to a list of free websites but I can't find it. Also there is a limit on photos on freewebs, not many at all.

I believe piczo allows more space for photos.

I managed to recover a friends 'lost' document by using the windows search function and searching for all *.tmp files. One of these was the document that she thought was unrecoverable. All I did was re-open (I think using Word) then save properly.

Is he just typing the story up from a hand written copy? If so, at least only hard work typing has gone to waste and not the creative effort which is a bit harder to replace (always trying to look on the bright side me).

If he decided to type it up again, a couple of tips - make sure you back up onto another disk, floppy or pendrive, and think about saving seperate chapters or sections as seperate documents - so if one becomes corrupt the others are still there (also, larger documents seem more likely to become corrupt).
