Invested last week in an Acer Aspire 9 inch web book running Linux, predominantly for travelling, then a 16GB HD SC memory card, and a HDSC card to usb converter to copy movies across from my PC.
First one was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in .avi format - needs a codec, and the other two were mpeg4 in ipod format - neither of which it reads.
Anyone any idea how to make the !!!!ing thing play movies??

you could always download the VLC media player - that plays anything you throw at it0

Thanks for the advice and the top ten tips.
I downloaded VLC and whilst it seem to install ok when you double click on the icon for it, it wouldnt start up.
Also, believing an update to be a good idea - as per the top ten - i kicked that off, and as it took ages (Several hours) i left the unit on mains power over night to let it continue. I got up this morning to find it had shutdown, so i rebooted it, and now it wont get past the blue 'Aspire One' screen. It just sits there.
So, i'm giving up. Its not hard to believe that Acer apparently get 5 times as many Linux machines returned as Windows - two simple activities, neither worked and one has rendered the machine useless. I'm taking it back today and exchanging it for one thats windows based - knowing that the above activities will be a ten minute job with XP as opposed to three hours of my life wasted not getting it to work on Linux.
Great little machine, ruined by a non intuitive OS.0
