Its pure craziness if you ask me. I had an account I didn't touch for 3 years for one simple reason, its my saving for emerencies. Mine is not in my local town, I have to make an effort to get to it, which was the whole point that I wouldn't just go and use the money for the sake of it.

Plus there will be many elderly people with savings accounts they won't of touched for years. To me it amounts to damn right stealing on the governments part. I bet there are millions of people who have accounts with savings they rarely touch, why should those people loose the money just because they haven't touched it. Isn't that the point of savings, to save not spend?

stupid government with their bright ideas.

    No one is stealing anything.

I somehow doubt it was untouched for three years - otherwise it would then have been dormant. This only applies if the bank loses touch with the customer completely - i.e. mail returned etc.

Again, it's about losing touch COMPLETELY, for a period of fifteen years. If someone doesn't touch something for that long, it's reasonable to claim it dormant.

Money is property like any other. Do you really believe that if you left a car unattended somewhere that it would still be there in 15 years?

    Quit being so sensationalist.

Well, you must be really glad then that you live in a democratic country where you can either vote for a party that will do things differently, or write to your current representative and express your dissatisfaction.

No one is stealing it you will still be able to get the money back if you want to and can prove you have a right to it. It just another use for the money.

I've had 1p in my ex Halifax account for years and years, they keep sending me yearly statements. Waste of paper! (and I cannot close it down as I can't get past security questions, but I haven't had a debit card in a while hm)

I am surprised they don't make it dorment and just stop sending you statements.

They may now as they are short of money.
  • Current accounts don't seem to go dormant in the same way as savings accounts do.
