Stripping matt paint from wood??

I bought a small shelving rack from ebay that was described as painted pine and the seller said it could be removed if desired. I didn't like the colour so thought it would be ok as I would strip it back to the wood and varnish it.
However, I wrongly assumed that the paint would be gloss and easy to do but it's not - the paint is matt and looks like it has at least 2 coats!! I'm not sure if it is made of pine afterall and even worse, I think the backing is plywood so will probably be nigh impossible to remove the paint from. However, I still like it and want to keep it (I should have asked more questions ....!!) and feel I may have to resort to plan B which is to just re-paint it anyway.
I've only ever removed gloss paint before and haven't found anything in my searches here that may help. I would much prefer the varnished look so can anyone advise me how to strip the matt paint please? Would paint stripper work??

treat with nitromors paint stripper , use as per instructions on the tin , especially to only use outside , do not use in confined area - highly dangerous
or take it to a paint striiping co and have it dipped . shouldn't cost more than a tenner ish0
