Hi
We recently had a power outage whilst using the pc, we lost everything and ended up having to do a destructive restore. We have since reinstalled AOL from original AOL9 disc but are unable to access the internet via AOL, we have contacted AOL helpline and spent a number of hours on the phone trying to get the problem sorted but we are still unable to get the AOL software to work correctly, we are having to connect via internet expolorer through dialbb and not are usual broadband connection. Microsoft has now automatically updated to service pack 2 but we are unable to find the xp sp2 patch, has anyone got any ideas how we can get AOL to work correctly and where to find the free xp sp 2 patch download as we can only find ones to buy, we are still having connectivity problems and dont have a clue how to sort it and AOL dont seem to be helping us, except costing us a fortune in phone calls.
Any help would be really appreciated

Hi Loaner
Thanks for the reply.
No we were not just blue screening, it had gone onto the restore program but would not allow us to do anything other than a destructive restore, nothing else was lit up.
The patch is the xp sp 2 connectivity patch, as for making AOL work, the AOL software will not open and AOL connectivity will not run, we have got firefox.

Have you had a look at 'device manager'?
(right click MY COMPUTER, select PROPERTIES then HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER)
Have you any yellow exclamation marks over any of the devices?
I too have no clue what you mean by the service pack 'patch' by the way!:idea:0 -

We have checked in the device manager and there is nothing highlighted there. Had a look in modems only showing our dial up modem and not our adsl, although its the adsl that we are connecting with at present as the dial up is not plugged into the phone line.
As for the connectivity patch it is a patch which we have previously had to install once the windows xpsp2 update has been installed to prevent connectivity problems, previously via AOL I just had to type in xpsp2 and the patch was found straight off, through firefox and internet explorer we type in xpsp2 and it only comes up with ones to buy not the automatic free download.

Hi Loaner
We dont have a router, we are connecting through a bt voyager 105 adsl modem. We are able to connect to the internet but not through AOL for which we are paying and prefer.

Clearly your internet is working. You dont need the aol software, and you ARE getting it through aol.
I wouldnt even bother trying.
Just make sure you use a decent firewall and anti virus:idea:0 -
What are the errors you get when you try signing in with aol software?Aol sent out xp patch on disc.Check out all your discs.
If you are almost out of contract phone aol and ask for a router and negotiate your monthly fee downwards while on the phone.
When phoning aol don't use 0870 numbers Check out http://www.saynoto0870.com/ for a cheaper way to phone aol0
