I know there are well documented issues with this and I have read all the advice on how to sort it out. I've even bought a dubbing cable to connect mic and speaker sockets but I still can't get audacity to record.
I'm using a brand new Sony Vaio NR38E with Vista Home Premium and have tried the control panel-sounds-recording-right-click but I don't appear to have any disabled or disconnected devices! The only device showing is 'microphone not plugged in'.
Is my laptop just not capable of recording from the web or is there anything else I can try? I don't know what sound card I have - where would I find that info? Burning CDs is fine btw.
I'm pretty peeved actually, as I'm used to being able to grab and save all those youtube audio goodies as well as various BBC shows and this seems like a backward step.:( I'd be grateful for any help!

Thanks for the replies. I tried the 'youtube' download recommended by loaner and it worked the first time but now I can't find the subsequent videos I downloaded.
I'll try again later though. Also, I haven't tried to record direct from say, BBC Listen Again which I was able to do on my old PC running XP.
The problem I have with Audacity is that I can't access the mixer control - it's greyed out, and trying the Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound then on the "Recording" tab, choose a "working" device offered by your inbuilt sound device solution from Wiki, to enable 'stereo mix' or 'what u hear' doesn't work as I have no 'working' device showing, even right-clicking to bring up hidden, disabled or disconnected devices!
It's just very annoying but I guess I'll just have to keep searching or maybe pay the shop a visit to see if they can help. Thanks again.0
