Cambelts
Good Afternoon,
Will need my cambelt (timing belt) done sometime soon. Car is on 63k without it being done, and im not sure the mileage is 100% correct.
Its a 1.6 engine. Who has had theres done recently and how much did it cost? Anywhere you'd recommend?
Thanks
Sean

Yeah, I know that. I just wanted a rough guide. It is a peugeot which I believe to be a pain to change the belt on.0

It should state in the service book when the belt is due. The other option is to call a dealer and ask. Usually, its not just the mileage but the age that determines if the belt shoudl be changed. I used to have a fiat with 48k miles. The mileage the belts shoudl be done is 72k or 5 years. As the car was over 5 years old, I made sure I had them done. For the sake a few hundred pounds, get it done in time. It can cost a lot more for a top end rebuild if the belt snaps!!If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

63k sounds about right for a cambelt needing to be changed. Most are between 60 and 70k.0

these are the offical peugeot intervals for a Peugeot 406 1.6 petrol engine:
Peugeot recommend replacement as follows:
07/98:
Replacement every 72,000 miles under normal conditions. Replacement every 54,000 miles under adverse conditions.
08/98:
Replacement every 80,000 miles under normal conditions. Replacement every 48,000 miles under adverse conditions.0 -
Never skimp on changing cam belts - manufacturers push the mileage limit out as far as they can. At 63K I'd get it changed reasonably soon.
Price of job depends on the hassle of getting to the belt. Cam belts on the old Vauxhall 8v engines can be changed in 15 minutes for example. 16v engines are a bit more involving, but I'd guess that a garage would charge for a few hours work. ie: £100-£200 area.
Also check whether any tensioners need doing at the same time.Happy chappy0 -
As you didn't identify what model it is and assuming a 1.6 306. Peugeot advise > 07/98 72,000 miles 08/98 80,000 miles (not adverse conditions which are shorter). As for the job being a pain Peugeot time the job at 1.2hrs.
206 is same interval and 1.4hrs.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
I had a 406 cambelt snap at 28000 miles. It was repaired by Peugeot even though out of warranty. The dealer said I would have been looking at a bill of £2500 to £3000.0
