Help ! Egg want to charge me £10 to give me details on ONE transaction ?

Hi guys, firstly sorry if this is posted in the wrong place.

I phoned Egg today to ask them if they could tell me what date I deposited a cheque into my account back in 2002. They said they cant tell me and the only way I can find out is to fill in a "data subjct information request form", pay them £10 and it could take 40 days to get the info !

I understand this is the same form that people need to fill in if they are requesting all their old statements to check bank charges etc. but I think its a bit harsh to charge me the same £10 for info on just one transaction.

Do I have any chance of them having to give me this info for free or is paying them the only way ?

Thanks a lot in advance for any info.

I would ensure that your data request ensures that they have to provide you absolutely everything that they hold on you! Make sure it costs them a lot more than £10 to action the request.

My point was ... if they insist on applying this charge .... make them work for it. Make it cost them more than it needs to.

To be honest, most banks would charge you a £5 fee for a duplicate statement.

Have you tried ringing them again and emailing them to see if you can get a more helpful response? You never know.

Is it worth paying it for the one thing you need?
