Rotten Veggies

Options
I'm fed up with the Mrs buying loads of lovely fresh veggies (carrots/brocolli) only for me to throw them in the bin 3 days later as they have gone soft and mouldy. We don't live near a supermarket so we can't just pop in and get things when we need them, so........are there any tips for making the veggies last a bit longer, as i hate wasting food/money.
thankyou.. :xmassign:

You could keep them in the fridge or freeze them.

Elona has a point - where do you store them?
I put all veg except potatoes and onions in the fridge and they can last for weeks. Most fit into the large salad trays but if there are too many I store them just above the salad trays. I also store grapes, kiwi fruit, melons, peaches and nectarines in the fridge as I find they last much longer.

  • I store all veg in fridge except spuds which are kept in the utility room. They seem to last well like this. Apples/bananas are kept in fruit bowl and other fruit that we occasionally get are normally kept in the fridge.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I try not to buy to much at one time, I prefer to buy what I know I will use. I try to plan my meals ahead. Even then I have have had to re-susitate a rubber carrot or two in the past! When its got lost amoungst the other stuff.

My fridge is not that big and once the lettuce and fruit is in there, not much room for anything else. I actually use a bit of frozen veg, so I spose I would suggest planning. Its just as healthy. i find brocolli, a wquick decayer...it goes yellow even in the fidge so wont buy that unless I will use it all the next couple of days

Will be making sweet potato soup soon as they were on offer and want to use them up before they go yuch! I dont know if they do , but dont want to leave it to find out!!!

keep your potatoes and carrots in the crisper section of the fridge, they'll keep a lot longer (take them out of the bags)

keep broccoli loose in top shelves of the fridge

wrap celery in foil and keep in the fridge

tomatoes and peppers should be kept out and keep all other fruit and veg away from bananas as they make everything ripen really quickly

also ALWAYS remove food from plastic bags at the bags make the fruit and veg sweat and they will rot very quickly

i used to keep spuds in a cool dark cupboard but they always sprouted and got rubbery before i could eat them my mil suggested the fridge and they've kept much longer that way

i guess it depends on how quickly you eat them... we don't eat a lot of potatoes

as for fruit, if you can get those 3 tiered hanging baskets those are great as the air circulates around them so they don't rot so quickly

but keep bananas away from everything else they let off a chemical (think it's ethylene or something) that makes every thing around it ripen very quickly... this is especially true with my organic bananas from my box scheme (and they ripen the extra non organic stuff i get the same way)

sweet potatoes take awhile to go off, more likely to go mouldy before they go rubbery though we had two that actually started growing roots once (got hidden behind the curtain in our kitchen windowsill, oops!)

wished we had land to plant them as we could have had our own homegrown sweet potatoes! getting the slips isn't always that easy in this country!

  • I used to buy fresh vegetables and blanche them and freeze them, now I just buy frozen veg. With potatoes I used to make mash and freeze it but you can buy frozen potatoes.
